Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi has called for the resignation of Maharashtra’s Women and Child Welfare Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, accusing him of spreading false information by claiming over one lakh 'love jihad' cases in the state. The term 'love jihad,' often used by right-wing groups to allege forced conversions of Hindu women through interfaith marriages, sparked heated debate in the Legislative Assembly.
Azmi, addressing the Lower House, highlighted that Lodha’s December 2022 inter-faith marriage committee, intended to monitor such unions, reported zero complaints of 'love jihad' as of March 2023. “Lodha lied to the House, claiming one lakh cases without evidence, upsetting society,” Azmi stated, demanding accountability. He has filed a breach of privilege motion with the Assembly Speaker and vowed to pursue legal action if it is rejected.
BJP legislators, including Atul Bhatkhalkar, defended Lodha, arguing that a privilege motion is the appropriate recourse, not public criticism. Azmi also condemned right-wing rallies across Maharashtra, alleging they promote anti-minority sentiments without permission. The controversy, fueled by Lodha’s unverified claims during the 2023 Budget Session, continues to polarize, with opposition leaders like NCP’s Jitendra Awhad noting only 3,693 interfaith marriages were recorded, not 'love jihad' cases.
