At least 12 people have died in 15 reported suicide or attempted suicide cases on the Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link) since 2024, the Maharashtra government informed the state legislative council on Monday. Industries Minister Uday Samant stated that four bodies have not yet been recovered in these incidents, while emergency and safety measures on the sea bridge are being reviewed and strengthened.
The data was shared in response to a Calling Attention Motion in the legislative council. According to the minister, six incidents of individuals jumping from the bridge were reported in 2024, resulting in four deaths, while two people were rescued. In 2025, six more incidents were recorded, with five fatalities and one rescue. So far in 2026, three cases have been reported, all resulting in deaths, with two bodies yet to be recovered.
The Atal Setu, officially known as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Shivdi–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, is India’s longest sea bridge, spanning 21.8 kilometres and connecting south Mumbai with Navi Mumbai. Of this, approximately 16.5 kilometres runs over the sea. The bridge was opened to the public on January 13, 2024, and has since seen heavy traffic usage, with millions of vehicles crossing within months of its inauguration.

Officials informed the council that most of the bridge’s carriageway is already equipped with safety infrastructure, including noise barriers, view barriers, and protective grills covering nearly 29.6 kilometres of its total length. The bridge also has six emergency call boxes linked directly to a central control room, along with continuous 24x7 CCTV surveillance and patrolling teams to monitor safety and respond to emergencies.
In light of the repeated incidents, the government has announced the formation of a committee headed by a senior police officer to study and recommend preventive measures. The minister acknowledged that additional barricading may be required in certain vulnerable sections and said instructions have been issued to explore safety nets and other protective installations based on technical feasibility and operational requirements.
Authorities reiterated that steps are being taken to strengthen on-ground safety systems while ensuring rapid response mechanisms remain in place. The government said the aim is to prevent further loss of life on the bridge while balancing engineering constraints and the operational demands of one of India’s most significant infrastructure projects.
