The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to release 124 prisoners from various jails across the state on Independence Day under its annual sentence remission policy, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Friday. The decision has been taken after reviewing the eligibility criteria, including the conduct and behaviour of inmates during their period of imprisonment.

Among those set to benefit from the remission policy, 118 prisoners serving life sentences will be granted premature release, while six other eligible inmates will receive special sentence remission. The government said the decision was taken in accordance with the prescribed rules and guidelines governing prisoner release.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said the initiative reflects the reformative approach of the criminal justice system. In a post on social media platform X, he stated that eligible inmates who have demonstrated good conduct, discipline and compliance with required conditions would be granted remission on the occasion of Independence Day.

The state government conducts the annual remission exercise every year by examining cases of eligible prisoners. The review process includes assessment of prison behaviour, legal eligibility and other parameters set under the applicable remission policy before final approval is granted for premature release or special remission.

Authorities said the objective of the policy is to recognise sustained good conduct among prisoners and encourage rehabilitation. The measure is aimed at helping eligible inmates reintegrate into society after serving a significant portion of their sentences while following the principles of correctional justice.

The release process will be carried out after completing all required legal procedures and approvals. The Madhya Pradesh government said only prisoners who meet the prescribed conditions under the remission policy will receive the benefit, ensuring that the annual exercise is implemented according to established rules.
