The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm on Friday amid persistent protests by opposition MPs over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, marking the fifth consecutive day of disruptions during the Monsoon session that began on July 21.
As the session commenced, opposition members, including those from the INDIA bloc, stood in the aisles, raising slogans and demanding a discussion on the SIR, which they claim is designed to disenfranchise voters ahead of the Bihar assembly elections later this year.
Speaker Om Birla urged members to allow the Question Hour to proceed, emphasizing the importance of democratic traditions and offering to facilitate discussions between government and opposition representatives to resolve the issue. However, with protests continuing, including sloganeering and placard displays, Birla adjourned the House within five minutes after addressing only one question.

The opposition’s agitation stems from the SIR’s removal of 52 lakh names from Bihar’s voter rolls, including 18 lakh deceased voters and 26 lakh who relocated, which they allege targets marginalized communities. The Election Commission defends the exercise as necessary for maintaining an accurate voter list to ensure fair elections.
