V.S. Achuthanandan, former Kerala Chief Minister and a towering icon of India’s Communist movement, passed away at 101 in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday, following a cardiac arrest last month, CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan announced.
A founding member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1964, Achuthanandan served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011 and was elected to the state assembly seven times, holding the Leader of the Opposition role for three terms.
Renowned for his unwavering commitment to workers’ rights, land reforms, and social justice, his death marks the end of an era in Kerala’s political landscape.
