Around 1,000 tourists have been stranded in North Sikkim after heavy rainfall triggered massive landslides, cutting off access to popular hill stations in the region. Authorities said continuous downpour has severely impacted the Lachen–Chungthang and Lachung–Chungthang roads, with major landslides reported at Munshithang and Lema/Bob.
The situation escalated on Thursday when around 200 tourist vehicles were halted at Chungthang, a town nearly 100 km from the state capital Gangtok. The stranded tourists are currently taking shelter at a local Gurudwara.
“Due to continuous rainfall and landslides, the roads to Lachung and Lachen are impassable, especially at night,” said Sonam Dechu Bhutia, Superintendent of Police, Mangan district. “All permits issued for travel to North Sikkim stand cancelled, and no fresh permits will be issued until further notice.”

In light of the dangerous conditions, the district administration has directed all tour operators to suspend travel to the region. Key routes connecting tourist hotspots such as Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley have been disrupted, and rescue coordination is ongoing.
Though the road to Chungthang remains open during the day, police have advised against travel due to slippery and unstable terrain. Officials added that restoration work will begin once the weather stabilises, but continued rainfall poses a challenge.
Tourism peaks in North Sikkim during the spring and summer months, when thousands flock to its scenic valleys and alpine lakes. Authorities have urged travellers to postpone plans and remain cautious until conditions improve.
Meanwhile, local agencies are working to provide basic amenities and support to those stranded, as weather forecasts predict continued rainfall in the coming days.
