A devastating landslide struck the Kedarnath national highway in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, on September 1, 2025, killing two pilgrims and injuring six others. The incident occurred at 7:34 am near Munkatiya, between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, when debris, rocks, and boulders crashed down the hillside, crushing a passing vehicle.
Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar reported that the two passengers, Rita (30) and Chandra Singh (68) from Barkot in Uttarkashi district, died on the spot. The six injured—Mohit Chauhan, Naveen Singh Rawat, Pratibha, Mamata, Rajeshwari, and Pankaj, also from Uttarkashi—were rushed to a government hospital in Sonprayag. Two critically injured victims were transferred to a higher medical facility for advanced treatment.
Uttarakhand’s monsoon season has been relentless, with rain-related disasters claiming lives almost daily. On August 31, two people died in separate incidents in Tehri and Pithoragarh districts. Earlier, on August 29, heavy rains and cloudbursts triggered landslides across Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri, and Bageshwar, killing six and leaving 11 missing. The Tharali disaster on August 23 claimed one life, with another person still unaccounted for.

The state has faced a series of calamities this season. On August 5, a flash flood in the Kheer Ganga River devastated Dharali, a key stopover on the Gangotri route, destroying hotels and homestays. A nearby army camp in Harsil was also hit, and 69 people remain missing. The recurring natural disasters highlight the vulnerability of Uttarakhand’s hilly regions, where landslides and flash floods continue to wreak havoc on infrastructure and lives.
