In a chilling incident that has revived memories of the infamous 2015 Robinson Street case, Kolkata Police on Monday recovered the highly decomposed body of a 64-year-old retired man, Sumit Sen, from his locked first-floor flat in Kasba’s Bosepukur area. His wife, Archana Sen, and daughter, Sampriti Sen, had reportedly been living with the corpse for several days inside the sealed residence, raising serious concerns about their mental health.
Neighbours grew alarmed after not seeing any family member for three days and noticing a persistent foul odour. When repeated calls and knocks went unanswered, relatives were alerted. A concerned relative who spoke to Sampriti over the phone found her repeatedly insisting that her parents were fine but grew suspicious when neither parent came on the line. On Monday evening, neighbours and relatives gathered outside the house and summoned Kasba police after the door remained bolted from inside despite loud knocking.
Officers forced entry and discovered Sumit Sen’s body in an advanced state of decomposition on the floor. Archana and Sampriti were found sitting beside the corpse in the same room. Police immediately shifted the body for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause and time of death. Preliminary enquiries suggest the family of three had been grappling with mental health issues for years, with neighbours occasionally providing food and assistance since Sumit’s retirement from a private firm.

The case bears eerie similarities to the 2015 Robinson Street horror, where Partha De lived with the skeletons of his sister and pet dogs and later set his father’s body on fire before taking his own life in custody. Authorities have sealed the flat and initiated counselling for the wife and daughter, while a detailed investigation is underway to establish the circumstances leading to Sumit Sen’s death and the family’s disturbing response in the days that followed.
