A catastrophic cloudburst that struck the Warwan Valley in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on August 26, 2025, left a trail of destruction, damaging approximately 190 houses and killing 45 cattle, according to Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma. While no human lives were lost, the disaster has upended the lives of residents in Margi hamlet, prompting urgent relief and rehabilitation operations by multiple agencies.
Sharma, accompanied by Senior Superintendent of Police Naresh Singh, visited the remote Marwah-Warwan valley to oversee the response. “Of the 224 houses in the affected area, around 50 are fully destroyed, 130–140 severely damaged, and the rest partially affected,” Sharma reported. He announced a month’s ration for affected families, with supplies and Red Cross relief materials distributed immediately. The cloudburst also wreaked havoc across six to seven locations, damaging roads, bridges, and water pipelines, which authorities are working to restore on priority.
The deputy commissioner directed the revenue department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other teams to expedite debris clearance and assess crop and fruit tree losses for farmer compensation. The public health engineering department was tasked with urgently repairing water pipelines to ensure safe drinking water. Sharma assured residents that a team would soon visit to devise long-term protective measures against future disasters.

During an overnight stay in Warwan, Sharma and Singh held a public meeting in Nowapachi to address community concerns. The swift response underscores the administration’s commitment to rebuilding the affected areas, but the scale of destruction highlights the vulnerability of remote regions to extreme weather events. As relief efforts continue, authorities are calling for comprehensive strategies to safeguard Kishtwar’s communities from recurring natural calamities.
