A team of experts from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) conducted a detailed inspection of Thamarassery Ghat Road in Kozhikode on September 10, following multiple mudslides that led to temporary traffic restrictions last month. The road, a critical link between Kerala’s Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, was reopened after the incidents, prompting authorities to evaluate its stability.
Directed by District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, the NIT team employed drones for a real-time kinematic survey, capturing footage of the affected sections to assess terrain stability and future landslide risks.
Dr. Santosh G Thampi, a lead expert, stated, “The three-dimensional visualizations created from this survey will aid in the analysis.” A preliminary report will be submitted to the district collector, with a potential ground-penetrating radar (GPR) inspection to follow if needed.
The inspection team, which included the deputy collector, Public Works Department (PWD) engineers, and other officials, aims to ensure the safety of this vital route. The initiative reflects Kerala’s proactive approach to mitigating natural disaster risks, safeguarding connectivity and public safety in the region.
