Kerala announced the launch of its week-long Onam celebrations, set to commence on September 3 at 6 PM with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurating the festivities at Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram.
Tourism Minister P A Muhamed Riyas and General Education Minister V Sivankutty revealed that the event will feature prominent guests, including film stars Jayam Ravi and Basil Joseph, alongside people’s representatives and senior officials. The celebrations, spanning 33 venues in the capital, will showcase thousands of artists participating in diverse cultural programs, highlighting Kerala’s rich heritage.
A major highlight of the festivities includes a mesmerizing drone light show on September 5, 6, and 7 at Chandrasekharan Nair and University stadiums, where 1,000 drones will narrate stories rooted in Kerala’s cultural legacy. The week-long celebrations will culminate on September 9 with a grand procession on Manaveeyam Veedhi, flagged off by Governor Rajendra Arlekar, who was personally invited and presented with the traditional Onakkodi attire. Officials noted that vibrant floats and performances are being meticulously prepared to ensure a colorful and memorable parade.
Onam, Kerala’s most significant festival, celebrates the state’s cultural and historical legacy and is observed not only across Kerala but also by Keralites worldwide. The state’s elaborate preparations underscore its commitment to promoting tourism and cultural pride, making this year’s festivities a landmark event for residents and visitors alike.
