In a fervent appeal to Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called for the retention of the BrahMos manufacturing facility in Thiruvananthapuram, emphasizing its pivotal role in the state’s industrial landscape. In a letter dated August 8, 2025, Vijayan expressed deep concerns over the central government’s decision to separate BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Limited (BATL) from its parent company, BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s office.
Vijayan highlighted that BATL, established with the state government’s participation, is integral to Kerala’s industrial development and supports the missions of prestigious institutions like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The facility, which evolved from Kerala Hitech Industries Ltd (KELTEC) after its transfer to BrahMos Aerospace in 2007, has become a cornerstone of India’s defence manufacturing sector.
The proposed separation has sparked alarm among workers, who fear that manufacturing operations at BATL could grind to a halt, jeopardizing jobs and local expertise. Vijayan urged the Centre to reconsider, arguing that preserving local manufacturing systems is essential for Kerala’s economic growth and India’s self-reliance in defence production. The appeal underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding a key industrial asset and its contributions to national security.
