PDP president Mehbooba Mufti declared August 5 a "black day" for India, marking the 2019 abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 as a betrayal of constitutional values. She described the move as the start of a broader attack on India's democratic framework, orchestrated by a "brute majority" within the nation's own corridors of power.
"This isn’t just about J&K—it’s a warning for all of India," Mufti posted on X, alleging that the abrogation has turned Jammu and Kashmir into a "laboratory" for disempowerment, land dispossession, and demographic manipulation. She pointed to similar patterns emerging nationwide, citing threats of disenfranchisement in Bihar and the addition of non-local voters from Tamil Nadu to Kashmir, which she claims distorts electoral integrity.
The PDP reported that its leaders, including Mufti, were confined to their party office in Srinagar, barred by police from staging a protest march against what they call the "unconstitutional" abrogation. Undeterred, party workers held a demonstration within the office premises.

PDP leader Iltija Mufti, speaking to the press, condemned the 2019 decision as an "illegal" act that stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its Constitution, flag, and autonomy. "Six years later, we’re still caged—treated like animals," she said, noting a heavy CRPF presence outside the PDP office that blocked their peaceful protest. "Which part of the Indian Constitution allows this? Our voices are being silenced."
She highlighted the ongoing suppression, stating, "We’re a legal party, yet we’re denied our fundamental right to protest. This isn’t just about Article 370—it’s about erasing our identity and rights." Mufti warned that the tactics used in Jammu and Kashmir could soon spread across the country if unchecked.
The PDP’s claims underscore rising tensions as the sixth anniversary of Article 370’s revocation reignites debates over democratic rights and regional autonomy in India.
