The Karnataka government has announced an ambitious roadmap to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) education and innovation by introducing AI learning from Class 6 and establishing India's first government-led AI University in Bengaluru. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said the initiatives are part of the state's vision to build an "AI-native Karnataka" through sustained investments in education, research and digital infrastructure. The proposed measures are aimed at preparing students for future technology-driven careers while positioning Karnataka as a national leader in artificial intelligence.
According to the announcement, the proposed AI University will be established in Bengaluru and will focus on developing skilled professionals in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. The state government also plans to create a dedicated AI Hub that will promote research, innovation and collaboration among educational institutions, startups, technology companies and industry partners. The initiative is expected to strengthen Karnataka's ecosystem for AI development and technological advancement.
A key feature of the government's plan is the introduction of AI education from Class 6 onwards in schools across the state. The objective is to familiarise students with the fundamentals of artificial intelligence at an early stage and equip them with the knowledge and skills required for future academic and professional opportunities in technology. The move reflects a growing emphasis on integrating emerging technologies into school education to prepare students for an increasingly digital economy.

In addition to education reforms, the Karnataka government has announced plans to establish two hyperscale green data centres to support artificial intelligence research, cloud computing and large-scale data processing. The facilities are intended to provide the technological infrastructure required for AI-driven innovation while incorporating environmentally sustainable practices. These investments are expected to strengthen the state's digital capabilities and support both public and private sector AI initiatives.
The announcements form part of Karnataka's broader artificial intelligence policy, which seeks to establish the state as one of India's leading centres for AI research, education, innovation and technology-led economic growth. By combining school-level education, higher education, research infrastructure and industry collaboration, the government aims to create a comprehensive ecosystem that supports AI development across multiple sectors.
While outlining the vision, the government has not yet released detailed information regarding the proposed AI curriculum for schools, admission procedures for the AI University or the implementation timeline for the various projects. If successfully executed, the initiatives could significantly expand AI learning opportunities for students while reinforcing Karnataka's position as India's leading technology and innovation hub.
