A BSc student at a private college in Dharwad died by suicide on Monday night, with his family alleging harassment and extortion demands by police officers following his detention during an anti-drug operation. Aditya Myageri, hailing from Belur village in Bagalkot district, was among 18 students detained by Vidyagiri police on April 25 as part of a routine anti-drug drive. The students, including Aditya who lived in rented accommodation in the Girinagar area with roommates, underwent testing for ganja consumption. While 10 students, including Aditya, tested negative and were released, some of his roommates tested positive, police confirmed on Wednesday.
The family claims that despite the negative test, Aditya faced undue harassment from officers. They allege policemen demanded Rs 2,000 to "settle the matter" and threatened legal action if unpaid. Aditya reportedly called his mother seeking money, but she couldn't arrange it immediately, adding to his distress.
On Monday evening, the 20-year-old was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his rented room. His family directly attributes the tragedy to police pressure, prompting swift action from authorities. Dharwad Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar confirmed an unnatural death case has been registered at Vidyagiri police station.

In response, three policemen involved in the detention have been suspended pending investigation. "Further probe is underway to ascertain the facts," Kumar told PTI, emphasizing the department's commitment to transparency.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns over police conduct during anti-drug operations in Karnataka, where student detentions have occasionally led to complaints of mistreatment. Authorities continue to investigate to determine if harassment contributed to the student's death.
