Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Wednesday denied allegations that he promoted betting, stating that his remarks related to a kabaddi match had been misinterpreted and taken out of context. His response came after a court directed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against him over claims that he placed a small bet during a local sporting event.
Addressing reporters, Parameshwara clarified that his earlier comments were made casually and in a light-hearted manner, reflecting how such conversations often occur in rural settings. He stressed that he did not intend to endorse or encourage betting, adding that doing so would be inappropriate given his position in public office.
“The context in which I spoke is very important. If I had promoted betting, that would have been wrong. But I am in a responsible position; it is completely false to say that I promoted betting,” he said. The minister reiterated that interpretations suggesting otherwise were incorrect and did not reflect his intent. Referring to the legal developments, Parameshwara noted that the complaint had been filed by a private individual and claimed that neither he nor his office had received prior notice before the court’s directive. He said that an opportunity to clarify the context earlier might have prevented the current situation.

A Special Court in Bengaluru has reportedly ordered the police to register an FIR and conduct a detailed investigation into the allegations. The directive followed a complaint which argued that even a nominal bet, when associated with a public figure, could be seen as endorsing an illegal activity and sending the wrong message to society.
Parameshwara stated that he respects the rule of law and will review the court order carefully before deciding on further action. He also refrained from commenting on broader political matters, including a potential cabinet reshuffle, stating that such decisions rest with the Chief Minister and party leadership.
