Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, having recently eclipsed the record of D Devaraj Urs to become the state's longest-serving leader on January 7, is actively planning a cabinet reshuffle to solidify his authority ahead of the crucial state budget session. Sources close to the development revealed that the exercise aims to reward loyalists, accommodate new aspirants, and address internal dynamics within the Congress party.
The CM has formally requested an audience with Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, scheduled for January 13, to obtain the high command's approval for the proposed changes. Siddaramaiah has already held preliminary discussions with AICC General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal, a key confidant of Rahul Gandhi. Insiders indicate that, regardless of the scope, Siddaramaiah is determined to at least fill the two existing vacancies in the cabinet to optimize ministerial strength.
Ministerial hopefuls, including Legislative Council Chief Whip Saleem Ahmed, have suggested that the reshuffle process is likely to gain momentum post-January 10. Securing Rahul Gandhi's endorsement would serve as a clear affirmation of Siddaramaiah's unchallenged leadership, particularly in the face of persistent demands from Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's supporters for a rotational shift in the top post.

The Shivakumar faction appears to be mobilizing once again, potentially replicating strategies from November when high command intervention was required, including mutual breakfast meetings between the two leaders to defuse tensions. Observers note that similar pressure tactics, such as coordinated visits to Delhi, could resurface to influence the party's central leadership.
Supporters of Siddaramaiah remain buoyant following his historic milestone, with Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan publicly declaring his continuation as CM and economic advisor Basavaraja Rayaraddi expressing confidence in sustained governance focused on public welfare under the veteran leader's stewardship.
