Thalapathy Vijay’s latest film Jana Nayagan has been affected by ongoing Cauvery water protests in Karnataka, with several theatres across the state suspending screenings and removing promotional material as a precautionary measure. Theatre owners said the decision was taken to avoid possible law-and-order issues amid demonstrations by pro-Kannada groups and farmers over the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The protests, which have intensified in parts of Karnataka, have created uncertainty around the screening of the Tamil-language film.

Several cinema halls that were showing Jana Nayagan reportedly cancelled scheduled shows after concerns were raised about maintaining security during the demonstrations. Some theatre managements voluntarily stopped screenings, while others removed Vijay’s posters and banners from their premises to prevent possible confrontations. Released on July 23, Jana Nayagan had secured a wide theatrical presence in Karnataka, opening across an estimated 125 to 150 theatres in the state. The release included more than 75 single-screen theatres and nearly 50 multiplex screens, making Karnataka an important market for the film outside Tamil Nadu.

However, the ongoing protests have disrupted normal operations at several venues. At Bengaluru’s Urvashi Theatre, screenings of Jana Nayagan were halted following a police advisory, according to reports. Theatre staff removed posters and cut-outs of Vijay from the premises, and the scheduled shows were replaced with the Kannada film Karavali. The move was reportedly aimed at avoiding any potential security concerns during the period of heightened public demonstrations. The Cauvery water dispute has historically been a sensitive issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, with both states frequently witnessing protests over the sharing of river water.

The latest demonstrations were triggered by objections from sections of Karnataka’s farming community and pro-Kannada organisations regarding the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. While Jana Nayagan has continued its theatrical run in several locations, the protests have affected its exhibition in some parts of Karnataka. Theatre owners have prioritised safety concerns and crowd management while making decisions about continuing screenings.

The film, starring Vijay, was released amid significant anticipation among his fans, as it marks one of his major cinematic appearances before his increased focus on political activities. However, the Cauvery-related protests have created challenges for its smooth release in Karnataka, highlighting how regional issues can sometimes impact entertainment events and commercial film operations.
