Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court today, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious judicial career. The oath of office was administered by Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar during a ceremony at Raj Bhavan, Ranchi.
Justice Chauhan, previously the second senior-most judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, was recommended for the role by the Supreme Court Collegium on May 26, 2025. Born on January 9, 1964, in Rohru, Shimla, he graduated with honors from DAV College, Chandigarh, and earned his law degree from Panjab University. Enrolled as an advocate in 1989, he practiced extensively across various legal domains under the mentorship of senior advocate Lala Chhabil Das.
Elevated as an additional judge in 2014 and later made permanent, Justice Chauhan is renowned for his judicial acumen, having disposed of over 75,000 cases and delivered landmark rulings, particularly in environmental law. His participation in a 2019 international exchange program in Romania focused on child welfare reforms further underscores his commitment to justice.
