Pakistan declared a state of emergency across the country late Tuesday, urging citizens to remain indoors following Indian Air Force strikes on nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
The strikes, part of India’s “Operation Sindoor,” were a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 in Jammu and Kashmir. All airports, including Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International, have been closed, with Lahore’s shutdown lasting at least 48 hours, according to posts on X.
The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority cited security concerns, rerouting commercial flights. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the “cowardly” attacks, vowing a “forceful response” and rallying national support for the military. The emergency measures, coupled with heightened border security, reflect fears of escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors. The international community, including the UN, has urged restraint to prevent a broader conflict.
