Authorities have demolished around 1,400 structures across Jammu and Kashmir in recent years, while 143 luxury vehicles were purchased over a two-year period, according to official data presented to the legislature.
The information was shared in response to a query in the House, outlining enforcement actions taken against unauthorised constructions as well as procurement decisions made by various government departments. Officials said the demolitions were carried out as part of ongoing drives against illegal structures on public or encroached land, following due administrative process.
The data showed that the demolition exercise covered multiple districts across the Union Territory, though a district-wise breakup was not immediately detailed. Authorities maintained that the actions were aimed at upholding land-use regulations and preventing unauthorised occupation, which has been a long-standing governance challenge in the region.

Separately, the disclosure that 143 luxury vehicles were purchased within two years drew attention from legislators, with questions raised over expenditure priorities. Officials clarified that the vehicles were procured for official use by different departments and agencies, in line with existing financial rules and approval mechanisms.
The issue sparked discussion in the House over balancing strict enforcement against illegal construction with sensitivity towards livelihoods, while also ensuring transparency and prudence in government spending. Some members sought clearer guidelines on demolition drives and tighter oversight on high-value procurements.
The government said it remained committed to lawful enforcement, accountability, and efficient use of public funds. It added that procurement decisions and anti-encroachment actions would continue to be reviewed to ensure they align with policy objectives and public interest.
