Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal Khattar on Monday announced that all major hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir, including Kishtwar’s flagship projects, are now progressing strictly according to their timelines. He emphasised that earlier issues causing delays have been fully addressed, ensuring that power generation will commence as scheduled.
During his visit to Kishtwar, Khattar reviewed key projects including the Ratle, Salal (Stages I and II), and Sawalkot hydroelectric power projects. He stressed that clear directives have been issued to all agencies involved to maintain momentum and prevent further delays, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening the region’s energy infrastructure.
Responding to Pakistan’s repeated objections to India’s hydroelectric projects in the Chenab and Indus basins, Khattar dismissed them as “mere rhetoric.” He underlined that India’s firm stance on reviewing the Indus Waters Treaty in the context of ongoing cross-border terrorism renders such statements irrelevant.

The Sawalkot project, executed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), is expected to generate 800 megawatts of electricity, significantly bolstering the region’s power supply. Khattar also noted that the completion of all four major projects will benefit both local communities in J&K and contribute to national energy security.
Khattar emphasised that these hydroelectric projects, some of which have been under construction for several years, are now firmly back on track. “All projects must be completed on time. Work is progressing smoothly, and power generation will commence as scheduled,” he said, reassuring stakeholders of the government’s focus on timely execution.
The Minister’s visit to Kishtwar marked the first by a Union Power Minister after India’s review of the Indus Waters Treaty, signaling the government’s commitment to strategic energy development in Jammu and Kashmir while asserting India’s sovereign rights over its river projects.
