Anantnag Police rescued 25 nomadic families stranded under a bridge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Wednesday, as torrential rains triggered a dangerous surge in the Lidder Nalla’s water levels. The swift response came amid widespread flooding across south Kashmir, with Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam also grappling with inundated areas after heavy rainfall battered the region over the past 24 hours.
The rescue mission, conducted at Aang Anzwalla, ensured the safe evacuation of the families, who were trapped by the rapidly rising waters. “Anantnag Police acted promptly to bring the families to safety and provided immediate relief,” a district police spokesperson stated in a post on X. The operation highlighted the force’s readiness to tackle emergencies in the face of worsening weather conditions.
In a similar effort, Kulgam district police rescued five nomadic families from Brazloo village on Tuesday night after the Vaishov Nalla overflowed, threatening lives and livelihoods. The back-to-back rescues underscore the severity of the flooding crisis gripping south Kashmir, where swollen rivers and streams have disrupted normal life.

To manage the escalating situation, authorities have set up emergency helplines across police stations in the affected areas, enabling rapid response to distress calls. Police and civil administration have also issued urgent advisories, warning residents to steer clear of water bodies due to the unpredictable weather. The advisories emphasize public safety, urging people to avoid venturing near rivers and streams until conditions stabilize.
The heavy rains have exposed the vulnerability of nomadic communities, who often live in low-lying areas prone to flooding. The successful rescues in Anantnag and Kulgam reflect the administration’s commitment to protecting these marginalized groups during natural calamities. As the region braces for more rainfall, authorities remain on high alert, with rescue teams and relief measures on standby to assist those affected by the deluge.
