External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Canada on November 12 to attend the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, signaling a significant thaw in Indo-Canadian relations after months of diplomatic strain. The engagement, confirmed by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday, underscores New Delhi’s growing role in global discussions on security, trade, and sustainable development.
Jaishankar is set to participate in the G7 outreach session in Ontario at the invitation of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. According to the MEA, his participation reflects India’s continued commitment to enhancing cooperation with international partners and advocating for the “voice of the Global South” on global governance challenges. During his visit, Jaishankar is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings with key counterparts on the sidelines of the G7 event.
The trip comes just over two months after India and Canada appointed new high commissioners in each other’s capitals, marking the gradual normalization of relations following a prolonged diplomatic impasse. Ties between the two nations had hit a low after former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian officials of involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023—an allegation that New Delhi dismissed as baseless and politically motivated.

In recent months, both sides have made concerted efforts to mend ties. Jaishankar and Anand previously held two rounds of discussions—first in New York during the UN General Assembly in September, and later in New Delhi during Anand’s official visit. These meetings paved the way for a roadmap to reset relations, including plans to resume trade and investment dialogue that had been suspended amid the diplomatic row.
The upcoming G7 meeting, hosted by Canada, will focus on tackling global economic instability, security threats, and geopolitical tensions. Apart from India, the outreach partners include Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Ukraine. Jaishankar’s participation not only strengthens India’s presence in multilateral forums but also reflects cautious optimism in restoring one of its key bilateral partnerships after years of strained communication and mistrust.
