During a Rajya Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, Leader of the House J P Nadda lambasted the Congress-led UPA governments (2004–2014) for their "appeasement" of Pakistan, asserting they took no action against the neighboring country despite multiple terror attacks. Speaking during the 'Special Discussion on India's Strong, Successful and Decisive Operation Sindoor in Response to the Terrorist Attack in Pahalgam', Nadda criticized the UPA’s inaction following the 2005 Delhi serial blasts (63 deaths), 2006 Varanasi bombings (28 deaths), 2006 Mumbai train blasts (209 deaths), and 2008 Jaipur blasts (71 deaths), claiming "terror, trade, and tourism continued" with Pakistan. He accused the UPA of agreeing to Kashmir-specific confidence-building measures, including a triple-entry LoC permit post-2008, stating, "They kept killing us while we served them biryani."
Nadda highlighted the Modi government’s swift response to the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians, noting Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Kashmir by 5 PM that day and PM Modi cutting short his Saudi Arabia trip. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and PoK, killing over 100 terrorists, including Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Suleman Shah, neutralized in Operation Mahadev on July 28. Nadda emphasized the importance of political will, contrasting the current government’s proactive stance with the UPA’s “lukewarm” response. He cited the abrogation of Article 370, reducing stone-pelting incidents in Jammu and Kashmir to zero from over 2,000 (2010–2014), and a seven-day average terrorist lifespan due to zero-tolerance policies.
The Congress, led by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, countered, alleging security lapses and questioning PM Modi’s silence on US President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating the May 10 ceasefire. Kharge demanded Shah’s resignation, citing J&K LG Manoj Sinha’s admission of a security failure.
