Iran is reportedly reinforcing its military presence on Kharg Island amid growing speculation that the United States could launch a ground offensive targeting the strategically vital oil hub. The move signals a sharp escalation in tensions as the conflict in the region continues to intensify.
Located roughly 25 km off Iran’s coast in the Persian Gulf, Kharg Island is considered Tehran’s economic lifeline, handling nearly 90% of the country’s oil exports. Its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz—through which around 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass—makes it a critical geopolitical flashpoint with global economic implications.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that enemy forces were preparing to seize one of Iran’s islands with regional backing. He stated that Iranian forces are closely monitoring developments and threatened “relentless” retaliation against any country supporting such an operation.

The latest developments come days after US airstrikes on March 13 targeted military installations on Kharg Island, though oil facilities were deliberately avoided. The strikes were part of a broader campaign following joint US-Israeli operations that began on February 28, further escalating hostilities.
According to reports, Iran has begun laying defensive traps and deploying advanced weaponry, including shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles (MANPADS), to counter any potential invasion. Military experts suggest that the island’s layered defences and strategic importance would make any ground assault highly risky, with the potential for significant casualties.
The conflict has already disrupted global energy markets, with Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz driving up oil prices and raising concerns in major economies such as India and China. Gulf nations have reportedly urged Washington to avoid further escalation, fearing regional spillover.
For Donald Trump, the situation presents a complex dilemma. While additional US troops have been deployed and surveillance over the island intensified, a ground invasion could carry political and military risks, especially amid declining approval ratings and past criticism of prolonged wars.
As both sides dig in, the standoff over Kharg Island is increasingly being viewed as a high-stakes battle of strategy and endurance, with far-reaching consequences for regional stability and the global economy.
