A devastating fire broke out around 1 am at Birch By Romeo Lane, a nightclub in Arpora village near the Arpora River backwaters, during a highly promoted “Bollywood Banger Night.” Nearly 100 people were inside when flames suddenly erupted from the dance floor, sending partygoers into panic. While some managed to escape immediately, many ran in different directions without realizing the fast-growing danger around them.
Witnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly due to the club’s palm-leaf décor and makeshift structures. Several tourists rushed downstairs toward the kitchen, seeking a safer exit, but instead became trapped in an enclosed space with staff members. As smoke filled the area, suffocation claimed most of the lives. When firefighting teams finally gained control, they discovered 25 bodies, many yet to be identified, and six people had to be hospitalized with injuries.
The nightclub’s isolated location also worsened the tragedy. Marketed as an “island club,” it was connected to the main road only through narrow lanes that prevented fire engines from reaching the premises. The vehicles had to be parked nearly 400 meters away, delaying rescue efforts. The club itself had a single narrow entry and exit point, causing severe congestion as terrified visitors tried to flee all at once.

Tourists described scenes of chaos as flames engulfed the structure within minutes. Hyderabad tourist Fatima Shaikh recalled that the entire building caught fire “in moments,” with palm-leaf structures igniting instantly. Those who ran downstairs in confusion had no alternative escape routes. Only individuals close to the main entrance were able to run out before the smoke and fire became overpowering.
Authorities have now confirmed that the club did not have the required permissions for its construction. Arpora-Nagoa panchayat sarpanch Roshan Redkar stated that the venue had been issued demolition notices amid an ongoing dispute between the partners who operated it. Despite repeated warnings, action was halted by the directorate of Panchayats, allowing the establishment to keep functioning. The premises had been sublet to operator Saurav Luthra, adding more complexity to the investigation.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant called the incident a “very painful day for Goa” and ordered a detailed investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief and assured that the state government is providing support to victims' families. As inquiries begin, this tragedy has reignited concerns over safety violations and unregulated nightlife establishments in Goa.
