The Andaman and Nicobar administration is making a bold bid to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for four extraordinary natural landmarks, aiming to spotlight the islands’ geological and ecological treasures. Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar announced the initiative, emphasizing collaboration with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to transform these sites into global geo-heritage tourism hotspots.
Leading the list is Barren Island, home to India’s only active volcano, a geological marvel that has erupted periodically since 1787, with its most recent activity in 2022. This uninhabited island, 138 km northeast of Port Blair, captivates with its smoking crater and vibrant marine ecosystems, ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling, though landing is prohibited due to safety concerns.
Narcondam Island, another gem, is renowned for its rare Narcondam Hornbill, an endemic bird species thriving in its lush, volcanic landscape. The island’s dormant volcano and unique biodiversity make it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

The mud volcanoes of Baratang, a rare geological phenomenon, bubble with potential to become wellness and eco-tourism hubs, drawing parallels to South Korea’s Jeju Island. Meanwhile, the natural bridge at Shaheed Dweep, a stunning rock formation sculpted by nature, attracts thousands with its picturesque allure.
Kumar highlighted the initiative’s dual aim: showcasing the region’s rich heritage while boosting sustainable tourism. “We’re not just promoting tourism; we’re preserving our history, biodiversity, and way of life,” he told PTI. The administration is working with GSI to ensure scientific documentation, develop infrastructure, and promote responsible tourism.
This push aims to elevate the islands’ global profile, attract eco-conscious travelers, and uplift local economies through job creation and conservation efforts. By securing UNESCO recognition, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands hope to cement their status as a must-visit destination for those seeking nature’s raw beauty and geological wonders.
