Following their devastating impact during Operation Sindoor, the Indian Armed Forces are set to place massive orders for BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, a flagship Indo-Russian joint venture weapon system. Top defence sources revealed to ANI that a high-level Ministry of Defence meeting is poised to approve the procurement of a significant number of BrahMos missiles, including variants for the Indian Navy’s warships and ground and air-launched versions for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The decision underscores the missile’s proven effectiveness in the recent four-day conflict with Pakistan.
During Operation Sindoor, BrahMos missiles were extensively deployed, striking Pakistani air bases and Army cantonments with pinpoint accuracy. The IAF used the missiles to target terrorist infrastructure, including the headquarters of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan’s Punjab province, delivering precise and crippling blows. The strikes significantly damaged Pakistani military assets, prompting retaliatory efforts from the Pakistan Army to protect terrorist infrastructure, sources said.
The Indian Navy plans to equip its Veer-class warships with these missiles, enhancing maritime strike capabilities, while the IAF intends to integrate them with its Su-30 MKI fighter jet fleet for enhanced air combat versatility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently lauded the BrahMos and other indigenous systems, stating, “Operation Sindoor showcased the might of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat.’ Our missiles, drones, and air defence systems, especially BrahMos, proved their global prowess.” The expanded procurement aims to bolster India’s defence readiness, reinforcing the strategic role of indigenous weaponry in national security.
