In a landmark achievement for India’s defence sector, annual defence production has soared to an unprecedented ₹1,50,590 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25, marking an 18% increase from the previous year’s ₹1.27 lakh crore, according to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This milestone reflects a remarkable 90% growth since FY 2019-20, when production stood at ₹79,071 crore, underscoring the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Defence Ministry highlighted that this surge is a testament to India’s strengthening defence industrial base, fueled by policy reforms, enhanced ease of doing business, and a strategic focus on indigenisation over the past decade.
Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other public sector units contributed 77% of the total production, while the private sector’s share rose from 21% in FY 2023-24 to 23% in FY 2024-25, reflecting its growing role in the defence ecosystem. Overall, DPSUs recorded a 16% increase in production, while the private sector saw a robust 28% growth. Singh commended the collaborative efforts of the Department of Defence Production, DPSUs, public sector manufacturers, and private industry for achieving this record.
The ministry emphasized that reduced dependency on imports and a focus on building a robust defence industrial complex have not only met domestic needs but also boosted export potential. With sustained policy support and increasing private participation, India’s defence production sector is poised for continued growth, solidifying its position as a global player.
