Lieutenant General Pushpendra Pal Singh on Monday stepped down as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, concluding a distinguished tenure in one of the Indian Army’s senior-most leadership positions. His departure marks the culmination of a long and exemplary career spanning several decades.
In line with military tradition, Lt Gen Singh laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi to honour soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. He also reviewed a Guard of Honour at South Block as part of the formal ceremonial proceedings. The Indian Army confirmed the development in a post on X, stating, “Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh relinquished the appointment of Vice Chief of the Army Staff, VCOAS.”
An alumnus of La Martiniere College, Lucknow University, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Lt Gen Singh has held several key operational and command roles throughout his career. He participated in prominent military operations including Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, Operation Meghdoot in Siachen, Operation Orchid, and multiple tenures in Operation Rakshak, gaining extensive experience in diverse terrains and conflict zones.

Lt Gen Singh commanded a Special Forces unit in the Kashmir Valley and along the Line of Control, later leading an Infantry Brigade and a Mountain Division during Operation Snow Leopard along the Line of Actual Control. He also served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of a Corps headquartered in Himachal Pradesh, overseeing strategically sensitive areas including Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot. Officials highlighted his deep operational insight and comprehensive understanding of dynamics along India’s western and northern borders.
In addition to his operational expertise, Lt Gen Singh completed several prestigious training programs, including the Staff Course at the Defence Services Staff College, the Higher Defence Management Course at the College of Defence Management, and the Advanced Professional Programme in Public Administration at the Indian Institute of Public Administration. Academically, he holds a Master’s degree in Management Studies from Osmania University and a Master of Philosophy from Panjab University.
Throughout his service, Lt Gen Singh has been recognized for his exemplary contributions with numerous awards, including the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and a Bar to the Sena Medal. His retirement leaves a legacy of strategic leadership and operational excellence that will continue to influence the Indian Army in the years to come.
