India on Wednesday reiterated the need to take constructive and forward-looking measures to improve relations with China, as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Sun Haiyan, a senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), in New Delhi. The meeting focused on initiatives aimed at stabilising and rebuilding bilateral ties that were severely impacted by border tensions over the past few years.
Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the CPC’s International Department, is on an official visit to India to explore avenues for enhancing cooperation and dialogue between the two countries. The visit comes amid cautious diplomatic engagement by both sides following the resolution of the prolonged military standoff in eastern Ladakh, which formally ended in October 2024 after beginning with the deadly Galwan Valley clash in June 2020.
During the discussions, Misri stressed the importance of people-to-people engagement in rebuilding trust between the two nations. He highlighted the need to take “positive steps” to create the right environment for improved bilateral relations, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Emphasis was placed on restoring mutual confidence through sustained dialogue and practical cooperation.
