External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar signaled India’s urgency to finalize trade agreements with the US and EU, citing a “very high” degree of commitment from New Delhi.
Speaking at the Global Technology Summit, Jaishankar noted the Trump administration’s rapid response to India’s proposals for a bilateral trade pact, with conceptual agreement reached within a month. “It’s not open-ended,” he stressed, reflecting on stalled talks during Trump’s first term.
Jaishankar highlighted the US’s shifted global stance under Trump, whose tariff policies—sparing all but China with a 90-day pause—have sparked fears of economic ripples. India, undeterred, is seizing the moment.
“Our trade teams are charged up, ambitious, and pushing others to speed up,” he said, flipping past criticisms of India as the slow negotiator.
On the EU front, Jaishankar acknowledged the historically protracted talks but emphasized a new drive to expedite the free trade agreement. Indian negotiators, now “on top of their game,” are pressing the US, EU, and UK to match their pace.
With the US showing early responsiveness, Jaishankar remains cautiously optimistic, eyeing progress post-April 2. India’s proactive stance aims to secure economic gains amid a turbulent global trade landscape.
