India has reiterated its call for greater representation of the Global South, particularly in the permanent category, within a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The statement was made during a key UN meeting held at the organisation’s headquarters in New York, where India emphasised the urgency of updating global governance structures to reflect present-day geopolitical realities.
Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, delivered India’s national statement at the Informal Group of Negotiations (IGN) meeting on UNSC reforms. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India highlighted that strengthening the voice of developing nations is essential for ensuring a more balanced and representative global decision-making system.
India also drew parallels between its reform approach and the African model, noting shared priorities in expanding representation for underrepresented regions. The country has consistently maintained that reforms of international institutions, especially the UN, are necessary to address contemporary global challenges more effectively.

During his visit to New York, Sibi George held discussions with senior United Nations officials, including Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Operational Support Atul Khare. The meetings reaffirmed India’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and its longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, which remain among the largest from any country.
He also met Khaled Khiari, Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific within the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations. The discussions focused on a range of issues, with particular emphasis on strengthening UN peacekeeping efforts and improving coordination in conflict regions.
The Permanent Mission of India to the UN stated that George began his engagements in New York by paying floral tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi bust, symbolising India’s continued emphasis on non-violence and diplomatic engagement. The visit is expected to include further meetings aimed at advancing India’s position on UN reforms and strengthening international cooperation frameworks.
