Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a cutting-edge multi-layered air defense network designed to neutralize aerial threats from adversaries, including missiles, drones, and rockets, while enabling precise retaliatory strikes. Announced during his Independence Day speech, the system integrates long-range radars, satellite surveillance, aircraft, UAVs, and advanced interceptor missiles to safeguard India’s skies and population.
“India is launching Mission Sudarshan Chakra to create a powerful weapon system to thwart any enemy attacks… all public places will be covered by a nationwide security shield by 2035,” Modi declared. The initiative, conceptualized by top national security planners and missile scientists, responds to heightened threats following Pakistan’s launch of nearly 1,000 projectiles, including ballistic missiles and armed drones, during Operation Sindoor. While some were intercepted by anti-aircraft batteries and surface-to-air missiles, others were deflected through jamming enemy command networks.
Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, which neutralized 498 of 500 Iranian ballistic missiles this year, Sudarshan Chakra aims to counter advanced threats like Pakistan’s 2,200 km-range Ababeel missile with MIRV warheads. The system will use control centers to process inputs from satellites, airborne early warning systems, and radars to either deflect incoming missiles or neutralize them before warhead deployment or atmospheric re-entry.

Building on the DRDO’s Project Kusha, approved for extended-range interceptors by 2030, Sudarshan Chakra incorporates an offensive dimension with missiles like Pralay and Nirbhay for precision strikes. The Indian Navy will also deploy long-range missiles to target enemy ships.
With Pakistan’s arsenal, including Chinese CM 400 AKG and Turkish Yiha drones, neutralized during Operation Sindoor, India is studying Chinese and Turkish systems to bolster its defenses. Mission Sudarshan Chakra promises robust protection and retaliation, ensuring India’s security against evolving aerial threats.
