In response to a surge in anti-immigration protests in Australia, some targeting Indian communities, the Indian government has pledged to safeguard the welfare of its citizens abroad. On September 5, 2025, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India is actively communicating with the Australian government and diaspora organizations to closely monitor the situation. “The Government of India is committed to securing the welfare and well-being of Indians abroad,” Jaiswal stated during a media briefing in New Delhi.
The protests, organized under the banner of “March for Australia” in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, have sparked clashes between pro- and anti-immigration groups. Demonstrators have cited pressures on jobs, housing, and public services as reasons for demanding stricter immigration policies. While the scale of the protests remains limited, the Indian government is prioritizing the safety of its nationals in light of rising tensions.
A viral video circulating on social media has intensified concerns, showing an Indian man heckled during an anti-immigration rally. Addressing the crowd, the man stated, “Yes, I am a brown man. Yes, I am an immigrant from India. I came here for the right reasons,” emphasizing that immigration should contribute positively to society. However, his speech was abruptly interrupted when an Australian protester seized the microphone, sparking chaos and cutting his remarks short. The incident has drawn widespread attention, highlighting the hostility faced by Indian immigrants.
