On May 4, 2025, the Border Security Force (BSF) received in-principle approval to raise 16 new battalions, adding approximately 17,000 troopers, and establish two new field headquarters to strengthen security along India’s borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
This significant enhancement, awaiting final sanction from the Union finance ministry, aims to fortify the BSF’s vigilance across 6,726 km of frontier, including 2,290 km of the India-Pakistan International Border, 339 km along the Line of Control, and 4,097 km with Bangladesh.
The decision comes amid heightened security concerns following the fall of Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina government in 2024 and the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack, which underscored renewed threats from Pakistan.

The BSF, currently with 193 battalions, will deploy these new units over five to six years, supported by recruitment drives for men and women. Two new field bases, one in Jammu for the Pakistan border and another in Mizoram for Bangladesh, will enhance operational efficiency.
The BSF’s 2.70 lakh personnel face challenges like 1,047 km of unfenced borders through riverine and jungle terrains. This expansion, driven by evolving security dynamics, will bolster the force’s capacity to secure India’s frontiers and support anti-Naxal operations. With 1,760 border posts already in place, the BSF’s reinforced presence signals India’s commitment to robust border defense.
