The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and several other districts across Maharashtra, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall over the next few days. The weather agency has forecast unsettled conditions across large parts of the state until at least June 3, with some regions likely to continue receiving rain and thunderstorms through June 5.
According to the IMD, more than two dozen districts are expected to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light-to-moderate rainfall, and gusty winds. Wind speeds are likely to range between 30 and 50 kilometers per hour at isolated locations. Districts under the yellow alert include Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune, Satara, Jalna, and Amravati, among others.
The weather department stated that these districts are very likely to witness thunderstorms along with moderate rainfall and strong winds on June 2 and June 3. While no formal warning has been issued for districts such as Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, and Parbhani, these areas may also receive light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers during the same period. Several parts of Maharashtra are expected to continue experiencing intermittent showers until June 5.

In Mumbai, rainfall activity is forecast to persist throughout the week. The city remains under a yellow alert until June 3, with thunderstorms, lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds expected at isolated places. For June 4 and June 5, the IMD has predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers without issuing any additional weather warnings. Temperatures in the city are expected to remain relatively stable, with maximum temperatures around 33 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures near 27 degrees Celsius.
The latest forecast comes as the southwest monsoon continues to advance across India. Mumbai and several other regions of Maharashtra have been experiencing pre-monsoon showers, while meteorologists anticipate the arrival of the southwest monsoon in the city around June 5. These weather developments are being closely monitored by authorities as the state prepares for the onset of the rainy season.
Recent rainfall data has highlighted the unusually dry conditions experienced by Mumbai during May. The IMD's Santacruz observatory recorded only 8.8 millimetres of rainfall during the month, while the Colaba observatory recorded just 0.6 millimetres. The figures are significantly lower than previous years, when Santacruz recorded 378.4 millimetres in May 2025 and 21.3 millimetres in May 2024, underscoring concerns over below-normal pre-monsoon rainfall this year.
