Massive crowds gathered at the Khanapara area of Guwahati on Tuesday to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Himanta Biswa Sarma as Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term, marking a significant political moment for the state as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power for a third straight term.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said people from across Assam arrived spontaneously and in large numbers to be part of what he described as a historic occasion. Speaking to reporters at the venue, he said the enthusiasm reflected the public sentiment around the new government’s return to power and its development agenda in the state.
Sarma, who was sworn in again as Chief Minister following the NDA’s decisive victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, continues to lead a government that has emphasized infrastructure development, governance reforms, and economic growth. The election outcome strengthened the BJP-led alliance’s position in the state, enabling continuity in leadership under his tenure.

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at a grand ceremony held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several senior leaders from the BJP and NDA. The event also saw participation from Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, alongside chief ministers from NDA-ruled states.
Along with Sarma, four other leaders were sworn in as ministers in the new cabinet. They included former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) President Atul Bora, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) leader Charan Boro, and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog. Their inclusion reflects the alliance-based structure of the NDA government in Assam.
The ceremony was attended by a wide spectrum of dignitaries, including prominent religious leaders such as 15 Satradhikars from Assam’s Vaishnavite monasteries, as well as industrialists and public figures from various sectors. The large turnout underscored the political significance of the event and the public attention it drew, as Assam marked the beginning of another term under Sarma’s leadership.
