The Himachal Pradesh government has announced a significant increase in paramedical course seats in medical colleges, the first such expansion in nearly 23 years, to address a critical shortage of trained technical staff in healthcare. The decision, revealed on Tuesday, aims to enhance healthcare delivery by equipping modern medical facilities with skilled professionals.
The seat capacity for BSc courses in Medical Laboratory Technique, Radiology and Imaging, and Anaesthesia and OT Technique at Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, will rise from 10 to 50 per course. Similar increases will apply at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, in Kangra district, an official statement confirmed.
“This move will ensure quality healthcare services by meeting the demand for trained manpower to operate advanced medical equipment,” the statement noted. With limited government paramedical jobs, the expanded training capacity is expected to open new employment avenues for Himachal’s youth, reducing reliance on out-of-state opportunities.
