Sixty-three opposition MPs, including members from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and INDIA bloc, submitted a notice in the Rajya Sabha on Monday to initiate a motion for the removal of High Court Justice Yashwant Varma, following the discovery of burnt currency notes at his residence after a fire in March.
Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain announced that the notice was presented to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. A parallel motion has been filed by both ruling BJP and opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha, signaling bipartisan concern. Hussain noted that Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs, absent during the submission, support the move and will add their signatures later.
Under the Judges Inquiry Act, a motion for a judge’s removal requires at least 50 signatures in the Rajya Sabha and 100 in the Lok Sabha. If accepted by the Chairman or Speaker, a three-member committee—comprising a Supreme Court judge, a High Court Chief Justice, and a distinguished jurist—will investigate the allegations within three months. The committee’s report will trigger a parliamentary debate and vote on Justice Varma’s removal.

A Supreme Court-appointed in-house inquiry panel found that Justice Varma and his family had control over the storeroom where the cash was discovered, deeming the misconduct serious enough to warrant removal proceedings. Despite Varma’s denial of wrongdoing, the findings have fueled demands for accountability, escalating the controversy into a major political and judicial flashpoint.
