The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast on Friday predicting heavy rainfall across several West Bengal districts, driven by an upper air circulation over Bangladesh and the West Bengal coast, coupled with an active monsoon trough. The downpours are expected to impact both sub-Himalayan and southern regions of the state, with some areas bracing for very heavy rainfall.
Sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, are likely to experience heavy showers until August 13. In south Bengal, districts such as Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Paschim Medinipur, and South 24 Parganas are set to receive significant rainfall, with Purulia facing isolated very heavy downpours until Saturday morning.
According to IMD data, Buxaduar recorded the state’s highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, receiving 150 mm, followed closely by Siliguri with 140 mm. Other north Bengal areas, including Toorsa tea garden, Banarhat high school, and Palashbari tea estate, each saw 110 mm, while Champasari recorded 90 mm. In south Bengal, Contai reported 110 mm and Sagar Island 70 mm.
