In a significant relief for the drought-prone Marathwada region, 16 revenue circles across Hingoli, Parbhani, and Nanded districts recorded over 65 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours on Thursday, according to a revenue department official. This heavy downpour has brought much-needed respite to the region, which has long grappled with water scarcity.
Wakodi in Hingoli saw the highest rainfall at 115.75 mm, followed by Adgaon in Parbhani with 107 mm, and Taroda in Nanded with 103.2 mm. Five revenue circles each in Hingoli and Parbhani, and six in Nanded, reported excessive rainfall, signaling a robust monsoon season. The average rainfall across Marathwada’s eight districts has reached 285 mm, a promising figure for the region’s agriculture and water management.
The deluge has significantly boosted water levels in Marathwada’s 11 major irrigation projects, with reservoirs now at an average of 78.06% capacity, a stark improvement from last year’s 30.6%. This surge is expected to support farmers and alleviate water stress in the region, which has faced recurring droughts. Authorities are monitoring the situation to ensure effective water management and prevent potential flooding in low-lying areas.
