The death toll from the July 27, 2025, stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar climbed to nine on Wednesday with the passing of Phoolmati, a 55-year-old from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, at AIIMS Rishikesh.
Phoolmati, critically injured during the incident, was shifted from Haridwar District Hospital and remained on ventilator support until her death, confirmed District Magistrate Mayur Dixit. The stampede, triggered by overcrowding during a Kanwar Yatra influx on the last Monday of Shravan, initially claimed eight lives and injured 30 others.
AIIMS Rishikesh reported five survivors still under treatment, with Diksha and her four-year-old daughter Akanksha from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, on ventilators, and two others on oxygen support. One patient’s condition has stabilized.
The tragedy, occurring at the temple’s cable car entrance, prompted a magisterial probe ordered by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, citing crowd mismanagement. Enhanced police deployment and traffic diversions followed, with 2.5 crore Kanwariyas visiting Haridwar by July 29.
