United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the reported peace agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as “a critical step” toward the settlement of the conflict and broader regional stability. The statement comes amid international reactions to the deal that is expected to pave the way for a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
According to a statement issued by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General expressed “deep appreciation” for the constructive role played by several regional countries, including Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, in facilitating negotiations between the two sides. The United Nations said these efforts were instrumental in supporting dialogue during a period of heightened geopolitical tensions.
The reported agreement between the United States and Iran includes provisions for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, alongside a framework for continued negotiations on outstanding issues. It also outlines steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which is used for the transport of a significant portion of the world’s crude oil supplies and has been a focal point of recent conflict-related disruptions.

US President Donald Trump announced the development on Truth Social, stating that the agreement had been finalised and would be formally signed in Switzerland on June 19. The announcement has been closely watched by global markets and diplomatic observers due to its potential implications for energy security and regional stability.
Guterres emphasised that the United Nations views the agreement as an important opportunity to de-escalate tensions and move toward a durable political solution. He reiterated that the organisation stands ready to support all parties in implementing the deal and achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace framework.
The UN chief’s remarks add to a growing chorus of international reactions welcoming the reported breakthrough, which has already influenced oil markets and global diplomatic engagements. While details of the agreement have not yet been fully released, the international community continues to monitor developments ahead of the scheduled signing ceremony in Switzerland.
