In a major safety crackdown, Gujarat authorities have shut down five bridges on the Narmada canal network deemed too dangerous for vehicles. Additionally, heavy vehicles are now banned from using four other bridges as officials race against time to prevent further accidents.
The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) conducted a thorough inspection of over 2,100 bridges spanning national highways, state roads, and village routes across the canal system. The inspections revealed critical structural weaknesses, prompting immediate closures and repair orders.
Two of the closed bridges are in Morbi district, while three others lie in Surendranagar. Meanwhile, 36 more bridges have been ordered shut for urgent maintenance.

The move follows a tragic incident on July 9 when a 40-year-old bridge near Gambhira village collapsed, causing multiple vehicles to fall into the Mahisagar river and resulting in at least 20 deaths.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is personally overseeing the repair work, emphasizing quality control and speedy completion to ensure public safety. Officials have been instructed to address citizen complaints with priority as the state battles the impact of recent heavy rains that damaged roads and infrastructure.
With bridges closing across the vital Narmada canal network, commuters and transporters are urged to plan alternate routes and stay alert to evolving traffic advisories.
