On July 13, 2025, the Gujarat government approved Rs 212 crore for a new two-lane, high-level bridge near Mujpur, Vadodara, just four days after the catastrophic collapse of the Gambhira Bridge over the Mahisagar River. The July 9 incident, which killed 20 people and left one person missing, saw multiple vehicles plunge into the river when a 40-year-old section of the bridge, a vital link between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, gave way. Rescue operations, using rubber boats and NDRF teams, continue to search for the missing individual, with vehicle wreckage already salvaged.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel greenlit the project, targeting completion within 18 months, with the Roads and Buildings Department initiating the tendering process. A detailed project report confirms the new bridge will run parallel to the collapsed structure, connecting Padra and Anklav. Superintending Engineer N.V. Rathva announced the existing two-lane Mujpur approach road will be widened to four lanes, spanning 7 meters, with a 4.2-km highway stretch also upgraded. The swift approval addresses disrupted connectivity impacting commuters and students.
The state disbursed Rs 62 lakh in aid to victims’ families, with Rs 4 lakh per deceased and Rs 50,000 per injured, as announced by Patel, alongside a high-level probe into the collapse.
