Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant revealed that cyber frauds resulted in losses of Rs 100 crore for the state’s residents in 2024, contributing to a staggering Rs 22,845 crore in cybercrime losses nationwide. Speaking at a BJP-organised workshop in Panaji aimed at curbing online fraud, Sawant described the figures as alarming and urged party leaders to raise awareness about cybercrime at the grassroots level.
The Chief Minister highlighted that victims of cyber frauds include both uneducated and educated individuals, underscoring the widespread impact of these crimes. He emphasised the need for preventive measures and robust public awareness campaigns to combat the growing threat. The workshop was designed to equip BJP leaders to act as "ambassadors against cyber frauds", spreading knowledge about safe online practices.
Sawant’s remarks come amid rising concerns over the increasing sophistication of cybercrimes, including phishing, identity theft, and financial scams, which have targeted individuals across India. Goa, a major tourist hub, has seen a surge in such incidents, prompting calls for stronger cybersecurity measures and public education.
