Residents of Greater Kailash‑1, one of the upscale neighbourhoods in South Delhi, have been opposing the construction of a proposed 400-bed private hospital by the Medanta group near Archana Complex. The opposition has been ongoing for more than two years, with several residents periodically staging protests and raising concerns about the impact the project could have on the area’s infrastructure and living conditions.
According to residents, one of the biggest concerns is the potential increase in traffic congestion and parking problems in the locality. Greater Kailash-1 already experiences significant traffic during peak hours, and locals believe that a large hospital would bring a continuous flow of ambulances, visitors, and medical staff, which could worsen road congestion. They also fear that the hospital’s operations could place additional pressure on civic infrastructure, including water supply, sewage systems, and waste management services.
Another issue raised by residents is the handling of biomedical waste, which they argue could pose a public health risk if not managed properly. Some residents believe that locating such a large healthcare facility within a densely populated residential area may create environmental and safety challenges. These concerns have been a central theme of the protests organised by the residents’ groups in the neighbourhood.

Apart from civic concerns, the residents have also raised questions regarding land ownership and approvals for the project. Last year, they filed a petition challenging aspects of the project in the Delhi High Court, seeking clarification on the legal status of the land and whether the necessary permissions were properly obtained before construction began. Despite the case being heard in court, residents claim that construction work at the site has continued.
The dispute highlights a broader conflict between urban development and neighbourhood concerns in major cities like New Delhi. While large hospitals can significantly improve healthcare access, residents in established residential areas often worry about the potential effects on their local environment and daily life. The outcome of the legal proceedings and discussions between authorities, residents, and the developer will likely determine whether the project proceeds as planned.
