Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari issued a stern warning to contractors during a review meeting in Gandhinagar, emphasizing the need for uncompromising quality in road construction projects. Chairing the session with officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gadkari directed that all works must adhere to the highest standards to ensure public safety and convenience. He explicitly stated that any negligence in the construction or resurfacing of national highways would not be tolerated, with strict action promised against defaulters. This comes amid ongoing efforts to bolster India's vast highway network, which handles a significant portion of the nation's traffic and is critical for economic connectivity.

The meeting focused on the progress of key infrastructure projects across Gujarat, including inspections of the under-construction section of National Highway-48 in Himmatnagar town, Sabarkantha district. Gadkari reviewed developments at the Motipura flyover and an underpass on the highway, underscoring the urgency of timely completion. Extending his visit, he traveled to Surat in south Gujarat on Thursday to assess NHAI initiatives on regional highways, engaging in detailed discussions about the status of various national routes and timelines for pending tasks. Officials and contractors were instructed to prioritize smooth connectivity, treating these responsibilities with the utmost seriousness to avoid disruptions in vital transport corridors.

Gadkari assured robust financial support from the central government, pledging Rs 20,000 crore for the construction, resurfacing, and related projects on national highways in Gujarat. This allocation aims to accelerate development and address bottlenecks in high-traffic areas. Chief Minister Patel highlighted the state's reliance on these highways, noting that they carry over 35% of the total traffic load and require prompt repairs or expansions where necessary. Patel also urged the expedited completion of major routes, including Ahmedabad-Mumbai, Rajkot-Gondal-Jetpur, and Ahmedabad-Udaipur, to enhance interstate linkages and support regional growth.
